10 Years On: Remembering the MD-11’s Farewell Journey

The final commercial passenger flight of the MD-11, operated by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, departed on October 25, 2014, and landed on October 26, 2014. This historic flight, numbered KL 672, took off from Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport and made its final landing at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

The overnight journey symbolized the end of an era for the iconic tri-jet, and KLM, the last major carrier to operate the MD-11 in passenger service, commemorated the occasion with special flights and tributes. Fans of the aircraft gathered to witness its final moments in the sky, capturing the aircraft’s distinctive silhouette with its three engines and T-tail as it made its last commercial descent.

While this was the last scheduled passenger flight, the MD-11 continued its legacy in the cargo industry, serving operators like FedEx and UPS for years afterward. The final flight was not just a farewell to a unique aircraft design, but also a nostalgic moment for those who appreciated the MD-11’s contributions to long-haul travel.
