Flag of Western Sahara

The flag of Western Sahara (used by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic – SADR) consists of:

  • Three horizontal stripes:
    • Black (top)
    • White (middle)
    • Green (bottom)
  • A red triangle on the hoist side (left), containing a red crescent and star in the white stripe.

Meaning of the colors and symbols

The symbolism closely follows the Pan-Arab tradition:

  • Black – suffering and the colonial past
  • White – peace and hope
  • Green – prosperity and the land
  • Red triangle – the struggle and sacrifice for independence
  • Crescent and star – Islamic and cultural identity

Why this flag is political

Western Sahara is a disputed territory.

  • Morocco controls most of the territory and flies the Moroccan flag there.
  • The SADR, proclaimed by the Polisario Front, uses this flag in refugee camps in Algeria and in areas it administers, and it is recognized by a number of states.
