Mount Tahat — The Roof of the Sahara

Mount Tahat (Arabic: جبل تاهات) is the highest mountain in Algeria and one of the most prominent peaks in the entire Sahara Desert. Rising to 3,003 meters (9,852 ft) above sea level, it stands within the rugged Ahaggar (Hoggar) Mountains in southern Algeria, near the city of Tamanrasset.

Unlike the endless sand dunes that many imagine when thinking about the Sahara, the Hoggar region is a dramatic landscape of volcanic rock formations, jagged peaks, and high plateaus. Mount Tahat dominates this landscape as its tallest summit.

A Mountain in the Middle of the Desert

Mount Tahat is remarkable not only because of its height but because of its location deep inside the Sahara. From the summit, the view stretches across an immense volcanic desert landscape shaped by ancient geological activity.

The Hoggar Mountains themselves are the remnants of ancient volcanic eruptions, and much of the terrain around Tahat consists of basalt plateaus and eroded volcanic plugs. This creates a scenery that feels almost extraterrestrial—dark rock towers rising from vast desert plains.

Tuareg Homeland

The region around Mount Tahat lies within the traditional territory of the Tuareg people, a nomadic culture that has navigated the Sahara for centuries. Tamanrasset serves as a cultural center for Tuareg communities and as the gateway for travelers heading into the Hoggar Mountains.

Despite the harsh climate, the mountains provide cooler temperatures and occasional rainfall, allowing small pockets of vegetation to survive in the otherwise arid landscape.

Climbing Mount Tahat

Mount Tahat is considered one of the more accessible highpoints of North Africa. Unlike many technical mountains, it does not require advanced mountaineering skills.

Typical expeditions involve:

  • A 4×4 journey from Tamanrasset into the Hoggar Mountains
  • A multi-day trek through volcanic valleys and plateaus
  • A final ascent over rocky terrain to the summit

Because of its location in the Sahara, the main challenges are heat, remoteness, and logistics rather than technical climbing.

The Highest Point of Algeria

For highpointers—travelers who aim to reach the highest point of each country—Mount Tahat represents an important destination. Standing on its summit means standing at the highest point of the largest country in Africa by land area.

Yet the experience is less about the peak itself and more about the journey through one of the most remote mountain landscapes on Earth.
