The Armenian language (Հայերեն, Hayeren) is the official language of Armenia and one of the oldest living languages in the world. It belongs to the Indo-European languages, but forms its own independent branch within that family, meaning it is not closely related to neighboring languages such as Georgian, Turkish, or Persian.
Today Armenian is spoken by around 6–7 million people worldwide, including large diaspora communities in countries like Russia, the United States, France, Lebanon, and Iran.
The Armenian Alphabet
The Armenian writing system was created in 405 CE by the scholar and monk Mesrop Mashtots.
Key features:
- The alphabet originally contained 36 letters (today 39).
- Each letter represents a specific sound.
- The script is unique and not derived directly from Greek or Latin alphabets.
- The invention of the alphabet helped translate the Bible and strengthen Armenian cultural identity.
The Armenian alphabet monument near Artashavan displays all letters carved into stone and is a popular cultural site.
Two Main Forms of Armenian
Modern Armenian exists in two standardized forms:
Eastern Armenian
- Spoken in Armenia and Iran
- Based largely on the Yerevan dialect
- Used in education, media, and government in Armenia
Western Armenian
- Spoken mainly in diaspora communities
- Developed historically among Armenians in the former Ottoman Empire
- Used by Armenian communities in Lebanon, France, the United States, and elsewhere
The two forms are mutually intelligible but differ in pronunciation, vocabulary, and spelling.
