Korean

The Korean language is spoken by about 80 million people on the Korean Peninsula and beyond. It is the official language of both South Korea and North Korea, where it is referred to as 한국어 (Hangugeo) in the south and 조선어 (Chosŏnŏ) in the north.

Korean is considered a language isolate, meaning it is not definitively related to any other major language family, although some linguists have proposed distant connections to Altaic languages.

Hangul: The Korean Alphabet

Korean uses its own unique writing system called Hangul (한글), created in the 15th century by Sejong the Great.

Key features of Hangul:

  • Designed to be simple and logical
  • Letters represent the shape of the mouth and tongue when making sounds
  • Organized into syllable blocks rather than written linearly
  • Considered one of the most scientific writing systems in the world

Example:

  • 한 (han) + 국 (guk) → 한국 (Hanguk, Korea)

North vs South Korean

While mutually intelligible, there are differences:

South Korea (한국어)

  • Influenced by English loanwords
  • Uses slightly different spelling rules

North Korea (조선어)

  • More conservative vocabulary
  • Fewer foreign loanwords

  • Subject–Object–Verb (SOV) sentence structure
  • Extensive use of honorifics depending on social hierarchy
