Flag adopted: 1 December 1958
Designer: Barthélemy Boganda
The flag of the Central African Republic is one of the most original national flags in the world. It combines four horizontal stripes—blue, white, green, and yellow—with a bold vertical red stripe running through the center, plus a yellow star in the upper-left corner.
The design symbolizes the meeting of Africa and Europe, as well as the hope of unity among different peoples and traditions.
Color symbolism:
- Blue — liberty and the sky
- White — peace and purity
- Green — hope and faith
- Yellow — tolerance and prosperity
- Red — unity and sacrifice
Distinctive feature:
The red vertical stripe cutting across the horizontal bands makes the flag instantly recognizable and highly unusual among world flags.
