Flying with Royal Brunei Airlines

A quiet luxury in the skies — my journey from the Middle East to Southeast Asia

There’s something refreshingly understated about flying with Royal Brunei Airlines. No over-the-top branding, no loud gimmicks—just a calm, polished experience that feels almost out of another era of aviation. In April 2025, I had the chance to fly with them twice: first on a long-haul Dreamliner from the Gulf to Southeast Asia, and then a short regional hop onward to the Philippines.

🌍 Flight 1: BI98

28 April 2025
Route: Dubai → Bandar Seri Begawan
Aircraft: Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner
Registration: V8-DLE

The journey began in the shimmering desert hub of Dubai, boarding one of Royal Brunei’s flagship aircraft—the elegant 787-8 Dreamliner. From the moment I stepped onboard, the tone was clear: this was going to be a peaceful flight.

The cabin felt spacious and modern, with the Dreamliner’s signature large windows adding to the sense of openness. What stood out most, though, was the atmosphere—quiet, almost meditative. Unlike many airlines, Royal Brunei is a dry airline, meaning no alcohol is served. Instead, the focus is on attentive service, comfort, and a more serene onboard environment.

The crew delivered warm Bruneian hospitality—soft-spoken, attentive, and genuinely caring without being intrusive. Meals were well-presented, with a subtle Southeast Asian influence, and the overall experience felt balanced rather than excessive.

Flying into Bandar Seri Begawan was a highlight in itself. As the aircraft descended over dense rainforest and winding rivers, it felt like entering a quieter, lesser-known corner of the world—perfectly in line with the airline’s identity.

🌏 Flight 2: BI683

30 April 2025
Route: Bandar Seri Begawan → Manila
Aircraft: Airbus A320neo
Registration: V8-RBC

Two days later, I continued my journey deeper into Southeast Asia, this time onboard a Royal Brunei A320neo.

While shorter and more compact than the Dreamliner, the experience remained consistent. The cabin was clean and modern, with the quiet efficiency you’d expect from a newer-generation narrow-body aircraft. The same calm service style carried through—no rush, no chaos, just a smooth and pleasant flight.

This leg felt more regional and functional, but still carried that distinctive Royal Brunei touch: understated, respectful, and quietly premium.

Arriving into Manila, the contrast was immediate—buzzing energy, dense urban sprawl, and a completely different rhythm of life compared to tranquil Brunei.

📝 The QuixoticGuide Take

Royal Brunei Airlines isn’t about flashy luxury—it’s about refined simplicity.

In an industry increasingly focused on upselling and spectacle, this airline offers something different:

  • A peaceful onboard atmosphere
  • Consistently warm service
  • A sense of cultural identity that feels authentic rather than manufactured

It’s the kind of airline that doesn’t try too hard—and that’s exactly why it stands out.

For travelers moving between the Middle East and Southeast Asia, especially those curious about lesser-visited destinations like Brunei, Royal Brunei offers not just a connection—but a transition into a different pace of travel.
