Air Koryo

Air Koryo is the state-owned national airline of North Korea, headquartered in Pyongyang. Founded in 1950, it originated from the division of Korean National Airlines (a company that was established in 1946) into two separate entities following the partition of Korea.

Air Koryo operates mainly from its hub at Pyongyang Sunan International Airport, with scheduled flights to a limited number of international destinations, primarily in nearby countries such as China and Russia. The airline’s fleet primarily consists of older Russian-made aircraft, including models like the Tupolev Tu-204 and Antonov An-148, alongside some older jets like the Tupolev Tu-154.

The airline has a unique reputation internationally; it is known for its starkly traditional service and the distinct ambiance of its flights, which often include propaganda magazines and state-produced music. Due to North Korea’s isolationist policies, Air Koryo plays a critical role in connecting the country to the outside world, albeit on a very limited scale.

Air Koryo has historically faced numerous restrictions and sanctions from other countries, which affect its operations and fleet maintenance. The airline has a low rating on global airline review platforms and is often cited for its outdated facilities and equipment. Despite this, it remains a subject of fascination for aviation enthusiasts and those interested in North Korea.
