Our journey from Ghent to Sint-Martens-Leerne is a delightful 26-kilometer trek that offers a rich tapestry of experiences, from historical landmarks to serene natural beauty. As you begin your walk early in the morning, the city of Ghent slowly wakes up, its medieval architecture bathed in the soft, golden light of dawn. The cobblestone streets are quiet, with only the faint sounds of the city stirring.

Leaving the hustle and bustle of Ghent behind, you follow the gentle curve of the Leie River. The urban landscape gradually gives way to more rural scenery. You pass through charming suburban areas where locals greet you with friendly nods and smiles, and the pace of life seems slower, more relaxed.

As the sun climbs higher in the sky, you find yourself immersed in the lush greenery of the countryside. The path along the Leie is well-marked, guiding you through picturesque fields and quaint villages. The river glistens in the sunlight, its waters reflecting the blue sky and the greenery along its banks. Around midday, you reach the village of Sint-Martens Latem. It’s a perfect place for a short break. You find a quaint café with outdoor seating, offering a panoramic view of the river. Here, you enjoy a light lunch, perhaps a freshly made sandwich accompanied by a refreshing local beer. The village has a tranquil charm, with its tree-lined streets and historic buildings adding to the picturesque setting.

Refreshed, you continue your journey. The path now takes you through more wooded areas, where the canopy of trees provides a welcome shade from the afternoon sun. The dappled light creates a magical atmosphere, and the sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling accompany you as you walk. Occasionally, you spot a heron standing still by the water’s edge, or a family of ducks paddling across the river.
