Located in the south-central region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kasaï-Oriental is a province renowned for its rich mineral resources, vibrant culture, and strategic role in the country’s economy. Created in 2015 from the former larger Kasaï-Oriental Province, it remains one of the most important provinces in the historic Kasaï region.
The provincial capital, Mbuji-Mayi, is the second-largest city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has long been associated with diamond mining. Often referred to as the “Diamond Capital of the Congo,” Mbuji-Mayi grew rapidly during the twentieth century as vast diamond deposits were discovered in the surrounding region.

For decades, Kasaï-Oriental has been one of the world’s most significant producers of industrial diamonds, contributing substantially to national export revenues. The province is home to the Luba people, one of the largest ethnic groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their rich cultural traditions, language, music, and history continue to shape the identity of Kasaï-Oriental and the wider Kasaï region.
