Portuguese

Portuguese is a Romance language that evolved from Latin on the Iberian Peninsula and later spread across the world through Portuguese exploration, trade, and empire. Today it is spoken by more than 260 million people and is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor, and Equatorial Guinea.

Origins and History

Portuguese developed from the medieval Galician-Portuguese spoken in what is now northern Portugal and Galicia in Spain. As Portugal emerged as an independent kingdom, its language gradually became standardized and distinct.

From the 15th century onward, Portuguese spread far beyond Europe through maritime expansion, becoming one of the major global languages of the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds.
